21 English Fundamentals (3) NDA
Prerequisite: A grade of "C" or better in Developmental Communications 20 or assignment as a result of assessment test.

This is an entry-level course which emphasizes improvement of writing skills, including grammar, punctuation, paragraph and short essay development. It also introduces students to critical reading. 28 Intermediate Reading and Composition (3)
Prerequisite: A grade of "C" or better in English 21 or assignment through assessment test.
This is the final preparatory course in composition and critical reading. It is designed to assist the student to make the transition to English 101 30 Communications I: Understanding Literature (3) This course stresses reading for enjoyment of short stories, essays, poems, and plays. In additions skills in reading and writing are developed. 31 Composition and Critical Reading (5)
Prerequisite: A grade of "C" or better in English 21 or assignment through assessment test.
This course serves as a five-hour alternative to English 28 and prepares students for English 101. 32 College Literary Magazine Editing (2) RPT 1
Corequisite: English 127.

33 Basic Vocabulary (3) NDA

This course increases the student\'s vocabulary through the systematic study of words in contest and the study of word architecture. It also helps remedy deficiencies in syntax and usage. 67 Writing Laboratory (.5) RPT 3 Students are given individual help in improving their composition skills for all courses requiring written assignments (essays, laboratory reports, library and research papers, and term papers). Emphasis is placed on organization, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and mechanics. 73 Beginning College Reading and Writing (5) NDA
Prerequisite: A grade of "C" or better in Developmental Communications 20 or assignment as a result of assessment test.
This course serves as a five-hour alternative to English 21 and prepares students for English 28. 83 College Conversational English as a Second Language (3) RPT 1 NDA A conversation course for students whose native tongue is not English. Fluency in spoken English is gained throgh conversation and reports based on everyday practical situations, college, and other topics of interest. 84 College English as a Second Language I (5) NDA This course is for students whose native tongue is not English or who need assistance in using English as a second language. The course stresses study of idioms, sentence structure, word order, vocabulary, and reading for comprehension. It also provides practice in writing compositions. 85 College English as a Second Language II (5) CSU

This course is designed for intermediate level students of English as a second language. It includes pronunciation practice, intermediate grammar, vocabulary, word order, idioms, and reading comprehension. This course is designed to reinforce the critical reading and writing skills presented in English 101 through the study of fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction. Emphasis is on the analysis and interpretation of literature and on the organization and composition of critical essays, including the research paper.

This course is designed for those who want to learn to write professionally. Students write poems, plays, stories, and/or essays and present them for informal discussion and criticism by the class and the instructor. The student locates, evaluates, interprets, and organizes a wide variety of library sources with the object of producing a research paper. 203 World Literature I (3) UC:CSU

Great works of Western literature are studied in the contexts of the cultures that produced them. Hebrew, Greek, Roman, Middle Ages, and Renaissance writers are read and discussed. Students also produce critical/analytical essays in the subject area.
