COUNSELING SERVICES
The counseling staff helps students define their objectives and plan how to reach them. Counselors are on duty throughout the year to provide information which will assist continuing students and new applicants to plan their college program of studies. Students are encouraged to see a counselor periodically in order that their educational planning may continue wisely. Typical areas of discussion with a counselor include:
Review of requirements for the Associate degree at Harbor College;
Review of technical-vocational offerings at Harbor;
Clarification of the general education requirements and departmental major requirements of various four year colleges and universities;
Analysis of those Harbor courses which will meet lower division requirements at universities and colleges;
Administration and interpretation of standardized tests to assist the student in choosing suitable educational and vocational goals;
Suggestion of methods of overcoming academic difficulties which the student may encounter;
Personal counseling for achieving a more meaningful college experience;
Suggestions for more challenging programs for gifted students.

Counselors are available for quick questions on a drop in basis. Sign in at the Appointment Center computer station, and your name will appear on the counselor’s computer. Students are helped on a first-come, first-served basis. Listen for your name. The counselor will call you to the drop in area when it is your turn. Typical quick questions include clearing prerequisites, unit overloads, interpretation of the schedule, university requirements, nursing prerequisites, etc. You will be referred to an appointment for student educational plans (sep\'s), graduation checks, readmission after dismissal, evaluation of transcripts for graduation and university transfer. It is the students’ responsibility to provide unofficial transcripts for all counseling drop in contacts and appointments. All students should bring to the counselor their placement results, and any transcripts. We suggest you use the folder provided to you at the assessment and orientation session to safely keep your Harbor College paperwork.
